ATNS says not responsible for air traffic control at Hoedspruit/Eastgate Airport

South Africa’s air traffic management and control agency, Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), emphasised on Thursday that it was in no way responsible for air traffic control services at the co-located Air Force Base Hoedspruit/Eastgate Airport, at Hoedspruit in Limpopo province. Nor had the agency the power or authority to suspend flight operations to and from Hoedspruit/Eastgate.

The agency issued its statement after reports emerged claiming that the resumption of flight operations at Hoedspruit/Eastgate required a “declaration” by government or by the ATNS.

“The decision to cancel, delay, divert, or resume flight operations in and out of Eastgate Airport does not rest with ATNS,” affirmed the agency. “Accordingly, ATNS cannot be expected to ‘declare’ when flight operations at this airport will resume.”
